Let’s Review: BLP x Avoskin’s Multipurpose Tinted Sunscreen

What is Tinted Sunscreen & Who is it for?

What it is: We all probably know by now that we should never skip sunscreen. But we all also know that skincare routine and layering can also be time consuming. Sometimes in the rush we prioritize moisturizing and coverage over sun protection, and so SPF gets left behind in the rush.

So that’s where tinted sunscreens come in handy as they provide some coverage as well as moisturixing and SPF protection thereby cutting out the need for additional steps and products.

At the same time, tinted sunscreens still allow you to layer on additional products if you want to, and it won’t look or feel cakey- so it can also be used as a makeup primer. Hence, the fitting term “multipurpose”.

Who it’s for: So if you’re the type who prefers shorter routines, natural skin makeup, and/or a lighter feel of makeup on your skin- then this skincare-makeup hybrid could peak your interest.

How to choose the right Tinted Sunscreen for you

Go for SPF 30 or higher: Dermatologists recommend choosing a broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF 30 or higher. This ensures your product will guard against both UVA and UVB rays. Even though your formula is tinted, you still want it to act as a strong sun protector.

Know your skin type: Like any other skin care product, the formulation of your tinted sunscreen matters. If you’re on the dry side, stick to lotions and creams with hydrating ingredients like shea butter or hyaluronic acid. If you’re oily or acne-prone, lightweight sunscreens (think: liquids or gels) that are noncomedogenic will be your best bet.

Reapply your sunscreen: Like any other sunscreen, experts advise us that they should be reapplied every two hours. I must admit this is something I lack doing and struggle with, since I love setting my bases with powder- and once the full face is on- I don’t like touching it. However if you’re more on the natural makeup side of things and take your sunscreen seriously, having a tinted sunscreen makes reapplication a lot easier as it’s the last This should be easy if you use it as the last step in your skincare routine.

Now that you have the basics down, let’s go right into the review of the new BLP x Avoskin Multipurpose Tinted Sunscreen.

Packaging

It’s packaging is simple, sleek and minimalist, in line with the BLP beauty and Avoskin brand. It sticks with the recognizable white caps and tones of beige color story. All information is also transparent and written, easy to find on both the box and the bottle from the description, to the shade, to the ingredients.

Once you open the cap, I was happy to find a pump that makes taking the product out easier and helps me have a better understanding of how much I need i.e. one pump, two pumps etc.

Texture

In terms of its texture, as you can see above it’s not like your typical thick cream kind of sunscreen tube tinted sunscreens that I’ve tried. It’s rather liquidy, similar to the BLP Face Base foundation, but not as runny.

Shades

This Multipurpose Tinted Sunscreen (MTS) comes in 5 shades:

Light: a fair beige shade with neutral tone suitable for light skin tone

Beige: a light beige shade with warm undertone for light to medium skin tone

Medium: a medium beige shade with warm undertone for medium skin tone

Honey: a deep beige shade with warm undertone for medium to dark skin tone

Sand: a deep bronze shade with cool to neutral undertone for dark skin tone

I picked up the shades Light & Beige for my skin tone. Please note that because tinted sunscreens have sheer coverage in nature, even though you’re a shade level off from your regular foundation shade, it can still blend in with your skin.

For reference my skintone is between a MAC NC 20 -25 and I normally wear the BLP Face Base in W10. However both shades Light & Beige suit me just fine.

Application, Texture & Finish

I applied the recommended amount of sunscreen, which is the length of two fingers, onto my face using my fingers. It felt creamy and smooth and blended out very easily. As if it melted and became one with my skin. It delivers a sheer coverage where you can still see my freckles, sunspots and beauty marks peek though, but at the same time it also evened out my skin tone and minimized redness. You can of course, apply more to build upon the coverage of course, but I prefer touching up areas that need more coverage with a concealer afterward.

It gives the skin a radiant, hydrated finish. It’s not too dewy but it does feel tacky to the touch. So if you’re not a fan of this feeling, or if you have oilier skin, you can set it lightly with some loose powder. This will help with it’s longevity too. There’s a slight sunscreen kind of scent, but nothing too bothersome and it eventually fades.

Below are the shades Light and Beige applied on half of my face, compared to my bare skin. If I had to choose just one shade in between the two- I’d say the Light is a closer match to my skintone. When it’s first applied it does look a little lighter but after a while it melts into the skin and adjusts nicely to my skin. It also gives me a bit more leeway if I want to apply other makeup products on top. I find it’s one of those base products that look better as the day goes on.

Meanwhile, the beige also suits me just fine as it does blend and adjust, however there is a much more warm and golden undertone to it.

Longevity

After I finished applying and the rest of my makeup (concealer & light loose powder to set) it still felt very light on my skin. As time went on it continued to blend well, didn’t oxidize, doesn’t form a whitecast and my skin didn’t feel dry. It lasted a good 7+ hours when set with powder before beginning to show signs of fading, and even then my skin still looked even and smooth. No blotches or clinging to dry patches. It does however transfer, but only a minimal amount. And I’d describe it more as sweat resistant rather than sweat proof as if I swipe my sweat away you will find transfer on the tissue.

But these are minimal issues compared to the otherwise stellar performance of the first local brand tinted sunscreen product.

Shade References to other BLP Complexion Products

Here are some comparisons and shade references between the MTS and other BLP complexion products to see if Light or Beige is best suited to your skintone, if you have one similar to mine.

Final Thoughts

I am very much enjoying this tinted sunscreen and can see myself repurchasing it time and time again to wear as a base. I’ve been taking care of my skin more lately, and on days where I don’t want to cake on heavy makeup I’ve been reaching for tinted moisturizers, or lighter bases.

The only downside is that this is a limited edition item as of now, but hopefully if enough people love it and it receives great response, BLP and Avoskin will consider making it a permanent item as it’s a complexion product that can be a staple for many.

If you’re looking for a lightweight, sheer coverage and radiant tinted sunscreen, and want to support local brands whilst you’re at it- then you won’t be disappointed with this one. And I’ve a feeling more brands will soon follow suit.
